The man accused of killing a 9-year-old Florida girl could be charged with her death today. John Evander Couey, 46, was arrested in Augusta on Thursday and transferred back to Florida on Sunday. He was taken into custody in Savannah last week, but had to be released because of lack of evidence.
He confessed to the kidnapping and killing of Jessica Lunsford after taking a lie detector test in Augusta on Friday. Her body was found buried about 150 yards from her mobile home early Saturday morning.
Couey appeared before a judge Sunday morning, but the charges are not related to Jessica's death. The judge declared Couey indigent and told him a public defender would be assigned to his case.
Jessica was last seen on February 23 when her grandmother tucked her into bed. She was discovered missing the following morning.
The Citrus County, Florida, sheriff along with Jessica's father have said they want Couey to face the death penalty.
