Registration underway for Citizens Police Academy

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Registration is underway for the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department's next Citizens Police Academy.

The 14-week program provides a behind the scenes look at the police department, the 911 Center and jail. It also includes firearm/tactical training and an opportunity to do a ride-along with a patrol officer.

Classes will meet on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at SCMPD Headquarters, beginning Feb. 18th.

"People don't understand what the police department does. This kind of dispels any mystery about the department," said Gianna Nelson, assistant director of the Citizens Police Academy. "Our officers are open and honest. They will answer any question you have as long as it's not pertaining to a specific incident."

Registration is $10. Applications are available at all SCMPD precincts and online at http://scmpd.org. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 12.
