FORT STEWART (WTOC) - Severe weather swept through the area on Wednesday afternoon, leaving downed powerlines, trees and debris all across Fort Stewart.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the storm. Around 40 to 50 people and some pets were displaced and are being placed in a hotel on post.
Authorities on post say they believe a tornado came through around 5 p.m. and traveled two to three miles on post, traveling west to east.
"It went through the motor pool area, across the golf course, through the housing area. It clipped a little edge of the school and then, as it exited the post, went through another small area of a housing area and then across Sunbury Road. It took out some powerlines and trees and fences and did some damage to cars and homes as it went through the area," said Garrison Commander Col. Townley Hendrick.
Authorities are working to make sure all roads are accessible, especially for emergency vehicles.
