CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police welcomed 21 new officers to the department.

Seventeen men and 4 women were sworn in Friday morning after completing 11 weeks of training at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center and seven weeks of Patrol School.

During the ceremony, Chief Jack Lumpkin said this makes them one step closer to producing a fully staffed police department.

"It's a great feeling. We're getting additional services on the street. They're no longer within the classroom setting, they'll actually be in a patrol car and with another officer,” said Chief Lumpkin.

"It feels great. I've been pursuing this career ever since I got out of high school. So I'm just really excited to get established in a city like Savannah,” said Officer Benjamin Valdivieso, new SCMPD graduate.

The new officers will report to their assigned precincts Saturday and will spend the next 15 weeks riding with a training officer.
