Hundreds gathered to say their final goodbyes to Savannah native and Mercer basketball player Jibri Bryan, the 23-year-old who was shot and killed outside a Macon gas station last week.

The church was packed, standing room only inside St. James Catholic Church. There were folks from Savannah all the way to Macon, who came to pay their respects including the entire Mercer basketball team.

Family and friends wanted to make sure he was remembered for his success on and off the court. Even Savannah's City Manager Stephanie Cutter was there to present a resolution

“On behalf of the mayor, alderman, the city manager, its citizens, we join his family and friends in celebrating Jibri's life today as he rest in the arms of the heavenly father,” said Cutter.

Classes were canceled at Benedictine Military Academy Tuesday so anyone who wanted attend the funeral of their alumni was able.  Especially his teachers, mentors, even students who looked up to him.

"When I first got the news that Jibri had been shot, I was very angry,” said former youth coach Cyrus Hunter.

While many folks are still trying to digest the tragic news, Jibri's family wanted to make sure  he was remembered for the all that he accomplished.

"Jibri's legacy speaks for itself,” said William Martin, cousin.

Three of Jibri's coaches spoke on behalf of his dedication to the team and the game, including Mercer's head basketball coach.

"My relationship with him was really special. I'm thankful for all these guys who a here today,” said Mercer Head Coach Bob Hoffman.

His fellow Mercer teammates were among those who filled up the church. He'll forever be known for his basketball success, but those that knew him personally say he just as much a leader and inspiration off the court.

"He was really one that brought us all together and held us together as a unit,” said Martin.

The future seemed bright for a young man who had already accomplished so much in just 23 years. This was the last place many folks ever thought they would be, but there was only one place they all knew he could be.

"I know Jibri is resting in the arms of the almighty.”

Two people have been arrested and charged with his murder. It's still unclear of any type of motive.

We'll continue to follow this case and keep you updated.
