Residents in Savannah now have access to a new pharmacy that opened Wednesday on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, near Gwinnett Street.

Representatives from several Savannah organizations, including city leaders and the Downtown Business Association, are grateful folks in this area finally have easy access to a pharmacy. It's the first of its kind in the area, only selling prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

"We are focusing on the prescription medication. We are not wasting our time selling candy or diapers, and that kind of stuff," said Paresh Patel, Owner of MLK Pharmacy.

The owners have pharmacies just like this up north, but they finally decided to take a chance in the south, and city officials believe they chose the perfect location.

"A healthcare business, which is something that's been missing; a gap in the services in this part of time," said Bill Durrence, 2nd District.

"You ought to be able to walk over within your neighborhood and get the medicines that you need," said Richard Mopper, Chairman of SDRA Board of Directors.

Now, folks in the area can do just that, but they also pick up and deliver.

"We can send our delivery boy to the house to pick up the prescription; if they can come here we can fill the prescription and deliver the same day," Patel said.

They also have counselors on-hand at the store to help folks with their medications, in addition to outreach programs to educate the public about  allergies and diabetes. The overall goal is to focus on the well-being of their clients.

"We are people-oriented; patient-oriented; we take care of our patients very well," Patel said.
