SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The City of Savannah is working to keep the downtown area clean and green.

Last week, crews installed 27 permanent recycling bins on River Street.

They can be used to dispose of recyclables, like plastic cups, glass bottles, metal cans and newspaper. The bins are a result of the nine month recycling program in 2015 that reduced litter by 50 percent on River Street and recovered nearly seven tons of recyclables.

"Permanent recycling bins are becoming pretty common all over the country and I think Savannah is trying to lead the way in the Southeast here with that as well. We have 13 million tourists here a year,” said Savannah Environmental Services and Sustainability Director Nick Deffley.

City of Savannah Sanitation Bureau Chief Gene Prevatt adds recycling can also help extend the life of our landfill.
