Police say high speed and alcohol may have played a part in an accident on Interstate 516 overnight. It happened shortly before 1am this morning between the I-16 and Bay Street exits on I-516.
Witnesses tell police the driver of a Grand Prix lost control of the car as he was heading toward Garden City. It slammed into the guardrail and bent it in half. Then the car went over the rail and spun around.
The driver was able to get out of the wreckage before the car burst into flames. Savannah firefighters were called to put out the blaze.
Debris from the accident was thrown about 150 feet from where the car hit the guardrail.
The driver was taken to Memorial Health and police had blood drawn for an alcohol test. This morning he is facing a number of charges.
