Dragonboat races in Beaufort have a new race date

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

A big change to this year's Dragonboat Beaufort event.

What usually takes place during the Beaufort Water Festival in July is moving to Labor Day weekend in 2016. The Dragonboat Beaufort president says the decision is a good thing and a great new way to wrap up the summer.

Because it grows and grows every year, Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling says he is excited it's now a stand-alone event.

Last year, $65,000 was raised to help support those impacted by cancer in the county.

"The association with cancer and Dragonboats really took off about 20 years ago when some medical studies showed that this kind of exercise was beneficial to breast cancer patients,” said 2016 Race Day Director Andrew Nicholls.
Club and community teams will be forming over the next few months.
