Sea Pines resident files lawsuit over traffic issues

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A Hilton Head Island resident is filing a lawsuit against the town and several members of council over traffic issues and a new construction project.

Imagine waiting almost 10 minutes to simply turn out of your community.  Sea Pines residents say it's a nightmare, and that's why one of them decided to take matters into her own hands

"I called the LMO and left a message saying, ‘Hey I filed a complaint with you guys.’ She didn't bother to reply so at that point I said I’ll make them listen to me and I filed the lawsuit,” said Kate Keep, Sea Pines resident.

She says that lawsuit is in response to the town putting other agenda items first.

“In the meantime our town continues to approve more projects which is going to add more traffic,” said Keep.

The lawsuit calls for a stop on any building permits until the traffic issues at this roundabout are addressed, something the town says it’s been working diligently to improve.
"In 2001, we utilized the interior lane of Sea Pines Circle, we put all the circulating traffic in the interior lane and we moved back that circulating traffic to the center. We developed enough room to provide divider islands to divide to separate the turning traffic from the circulating traffic,” said Darrin Shoemaker, Traffic and Transportation, HHI.

But the work doesn't stop there, the town says it has plans to make the traffic circle more efficient than ever.

"We are looking at in particular improving sight lines for motorists, upgrading the signage, and improving the pavement markers,” said Shoemaker.

The town has 30 days to respond to the lawsuit. But officials admit there are problems with the traffic circle, saying the wait times for drivers are longer than what's outlined in the town's ordinance.

But they say the town is only responsible for identifying those problems and making recommendations on how to resolve them.
