STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Your view as you drive near the Georgia Southern University campus could get a little greener in the coming years starting on Friday with Arbor Day.

Students from a range of science classes planted 1,000 Slash Pine seedlings on an undeveloped part of campus outside Veterans Memorial Parkway. The trees will help control erosion and provide a habitat for birds and small animals.

Faculty say getting students out of the classroom shows them a living part of science.

“This way, students are associated with nature. They're connected with, in this case, trees,” said Assistant Professor Subhrajit Saha.

“I think it's important because we get to help the environment, as well as Statesboro in general,” said Kinard Sutton, GSU student.

The trees will also provide a sound buffer between future campus development and the parkway.
