Shuman Elementary celebrates Georgia Arbor Day

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Students at Shuman Elementary in Savannah dressed up Friday morning, all to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day.

The fun kicked off indoors, where students recited poems and performed a song and dance. Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach read a proclamation to kindergarten and first graders, and other city officials offered remarks.

The students then headed outside, where they - along with the mayor - officially planted their Arbor Day tree in front of the school.

"We're just grateful to be in a city that promotes trees in the way that we do. We want to continue to do that, and look forward to what happens down the road,” said Mayor DeLoach.

The mayor says each year the city donates a tree to a public or private school in Savannah.
