SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police, along with local private and public groups, are working to educate the elderly to make sure they don't become victims of certain crimes, like scams.

Monday morning, the Chatham County SALT Council, or Seniors and Law Enforcement Together, met with a group at Savannah Commons to cover an array of topics.

Workshop organizers say they recognize the fact that seniors are frequently targeted by scammers and they hope this information will help them from becoming victims.

"It's tragic and it's enraging, really. And we want to empower them so they can fight back, at this point with some education. And even if they can't actively use it, they can definitely use it to help somebody else," said Savannah Commons' Director of Marketing Jessica Schroyer.

The annual Consumer College, which is the larger version of the workshop, is Thursday May 5th at the Hellenic Center in Savannah.

The event is open to the public.
