Georgia Sen. Tommie Williams retiring

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A State Senator from Lyons has announced his retirement.

Sen. Tommie Williams says he will not qualify to run for re-election for the District 19 seat, but he will serve out the rest of his term.

Williams, also a business owner, was first elected to the Senate in 1998 and he's served 19 counties, including Montgomery, Wayne and Toombs.

Senate President Pro Tempore David Shafer released a statement on the announcement, saying quote:

“Senator Williams is one of the pioneering leaders of the Georgia Republican Party... He has served with distinction in every one of his leadership capacities."
