SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

WellCare of Georgia presented The Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center a check Friday to help children in our area.

The $50,000 donation will go to the Gulfstream Wellness program to fund a program for low-income children with type 1 diabetes. Every year in the United States, 13,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and more than 1.5 million American children and adults deal with the disease every day.

"Families who have a child with juvenile diabetes are going to deal with this for the rest of their lives. This donation allows us to provide educational materials, some camps during the summer. And then those child whose diabetes is related to lifestyle and diet, we address that also with these funds,” said Memorial Health Foundation Vice President Phoenicia Miracle.

WellCare is committed to education and healthcare programs that reduce childhood diabetes in this region.
