EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A new Recreation Facility will soon be built in Effingham County.

City leaders at Friday afternoon's groundbreaking ceremony tell WTOC it's long overdue. The new facility will be located on Highway 21 South in Springfield, just down the road from Parker’s and Food Lion.

After Friday, construction will be underway to finish the first phase of the project by Spring 2018.

"We're going to have a 118-acre complex. There will be three phases. The first phase is six athletic fields, a gym with two courts, all the amenities, ADA playground and probably $8 to $9 million. And then the second & third phase will follow,” said Effingham County Recreation Director Clarence Morgan.

Morgan says SPLOST will come up for a vote in November and once it passes, talks will begin for the second and third phases of the project.
