SCMPD investigating suspicious death of teen as homicide

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department is investigating after the body of a teenage girl was found inside a Savannah home on Monday, and now police have told WTOC the death is being investigated as a homicide. 

Officials say at around 7:10 p.m., Altonise Jones, 16, was reported missing by co-workers who had not seen her since March 19. Metro officers responded to the residence that Jones shared with her elderly grandmother to inquire about the teen’s whereabouts. About an hour later, a relative searched the home and found Jones deceased inside.

The teen's death is considered suspicious, and circumstances leading up to the her death remain under investigation.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations Crime Lab will perform an autopsy on Tuesday.
