Reach Out and Read Program in Savannah

Keep an eye out for a note from your kid's doctor. The prescription: read to your children. The Reach Out and Read program encourages parents to read to their kids.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss' wife, Julianne, read to kids at the Chatham County Health Department today.

"It's mostly geared toward children who are at risk, so children who normally wouldn't have books in their home are now able to live in a print-rich environment," said the program's Sarah Kovensky.

To help promote the literacy program, Scholastic has agreed to donate 500 books to each Reach Out and Read program in Savannah.
