Last week, the Chatham County Hospital Authority approved a proposed strategic partnership between Memorial Health University Medical Center and Novant Health.
The deal, now only needing final approval by the State Attorney General, should provide Memorial the capital backing and the corporate strength needed to take this region’s healthcare far into the future.
Without the deal, Memorial says the hospital would become more dependent on tax provided and private funding for much needed health services in our region like their Level 1 Trauma center and their Level 3 Neo Natal unit.
Forward looking advances like the Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah would be jeopardized. In fact, Novant injected $15 million into that new facility - if you were looking for an act of good faith you couldn't ask for a better one.
Consider this, Memorial Health is doing the right thing entering this partnership with Novant. It’s a much needed shot in the arm for the overall well-being of all of our healthcare. The health care industry has undergone immense changes in the past several years and had the leadership at Memorial done nothing to adapt, they would have endangered their existence, as well as ours.
