SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah City Council members interviewed candidates for two current openings on the Airport Commission, Thursday afternoon.
Nearly two-dozen applicants are being considered from all types of backgrounds. Council members had about 10 minutes with each applicant.
The Airport Commission is an important governing body that, along with management at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, makes decisions when it comes to construction, or improvement projects and overall development. Around 20 people are showing an interest to be the newest commission members. Recommendations will be made at a later council meeting.
Mayor Eddie DeLoach explained what it is they will be looking for in potential airport commissioners.
"You have to know about the airport to be able to use the airport, or what does it involve, to operate an airport. A customer will have a better idea than someone who doesn't use it that often, so we want to make sure we have people that are in the hotel business, or in the travel business, or anything like that," said Mayor Eddie DeLoach, Savannah.
In the coming weeks, council members will also be interviewing people to fill vacancies on the Metropolitan Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals, to name a few.
