SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Coastal Pet Rescue in Savannah is in the middle of one of their biggest pet rescue operations ever.

They rescued 25 dogs and puppies. Volunteers definitely have their hands full.

"Normally when we take animals from Animal Control, we're taking 5 to 10 at a time, so 25 at a time was a new challenge for us," said Lisa Scarbrough, director of Coastal Pet Rescue.

They, along with Chatham Emergency Management Agency staff, worked together
to accept all of these little ones from an elderly cancer patient who was being evicted from her home.

"They were obviously all cared about.  They all came with their own names and they've been very scared so our team is working with them to get hands on, build confidence," said Scarbrough.

Some are as young as four days old.  The oldest is 15.

"One of the dogs came in with nine puppies, the other one came in with three puppies and one came in pregnant," said Scarbrough.  “In breeds from Chihuahuas and Basenjis to a possible Boston Terrier mix."

None were spayed or neutered but they are all now in the process of getting vaccinations and their health checks complete so they will be ready for their forever homes.

"Our main issue right now is keeping them calm and comfortable until they get more social and ready for adoption,” she said.

Coastal Pet Rescue is need canned puppy food, canned adult dog food, puppy pads, baby blankets and money for veterinary care.  They are also looking for families to adopt or foster these dogs. All will be spayed or neutered, current on shots and micro-chipped before
going home.
