SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An Ardsley Park resident is speaking out after a man was shot less than a block from his home.

Describing a bizarre encounter that happened just minutes before the shooting on E. 51st Street, with someone who matches the description of the suspects police are looking for.

Police describe the two suspects as black males in their mid-twenties, wearing dark clothing and hats.

WTOC spoke to this resident who says he was approached by someone fitting this description as he was getting into his car this morning. He was able to get away from the guy and just minutes later, the shooting happened less than a block away.

"I had mouth wash in. I'm holding a banana and I'm thinking am I going to spit on him. Slap him, start a fight with a banana,” said Josh Futch.

Futch can somewhat laugh about it now, but he's still disturbed about what happened Tuesday morning as he was leaving for work around 5:30 a.m.

"I walked outside. It was dark, I didn't notice anything different. Walked to my car, opened the door, when I was going to shut it, I almost shut it on this guy,” Futch said. “I mean it almost hit him. From going outside and not seeing anyone to almost shutting the door on somebody, it's a little frightening. As big as the sidewalk is, there is no reason for him to be that close to me.”

He says the man never said a word to him and just kept walking towards Waters Ave. And moments later, as he's driving into work, his roommate called.

"He said he heard about 7 or 8 gunshots right outside, so immediately I was wondering if that could be the same person involved,” Futch said.

The shooting happened less than a block away. Investigators say 30-year-old Bernie Edwards was approached by two suspects who asked for cigarettes before robbing and shooting him. Edwards was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. And while he his description of the man he saw isn't any better than the vague description from police, Futch can't help but wonder.

"For how quick it happened afterwards and right in front of our house, I think there's a correlation there,” he said.
