Two Savannah firefighters honored Wednesday as Firefighter and Rookie Firefighter of the Year.

Advanced Firefighter Christopher Dekle was named Savannah Fire & Emergency Services Firefighter of the Year, and Advanced Firefighter Christopher Berry was honored as Rookie Firefighter of the Year.

Dekle joined in 2008 and he is currently assigned to Engine 11.

Berry is a graduate of Savannah Fire's Recruit Class 2014, and he is assigned to Engine 7.

Savannah Fire Chief Charles Middleton commended both men, saying they earned the awards through dedication and hard work.

But when we asked the guys about why they received the honors, they stayed pretty humble.

"I mean… I feel like there's a lot of people more qualified than me, but I think that I operate well with the rest of my crew. I really enjoy just doing what I can for the city and bringing it back for the community,” said Berry.

"It means a lot. I'm very humbled. I'm very honored to have received this. There are a lot of great firemen with Savannah Fire and to be the one chosen for firefighter of the year is an extreme honor... and I feel like I have big shoes to fill,” said Dekle.

Both Dekle and Berry are assigned to the department's South Battalion "A" Shift.

Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach was also on hand to praise both men for their outstanding achievements.

We here at WTOC thank you as well!
