Statesboro advances in America's Best Communities contest

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Members of Statesboro's delegation jumped for joy in Durham, North Carolina Wednesday afternoon when hosts read their name.

They are now among eight finalists for a $3 million grand prize in America's Best Communities. Sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH Network, CoBank and The Weather Channel, the contest challenged cities nationwide to come up with a project that would make their community better and convince judges they would be the best choice. Judges chose Statesboro and seven others from among 15 semifinalists.

"To be there and hear each and every community's sales pitch and to be selected is just a great honor" team member Bob Mikell told WTOC by phone minutes after the announcement.

Their celebration will be short as they have more work to do in the next round.

"We will immediately begin working on the next version of our proposal," he noted. "It will have more detail and we'll use the $100,000 we won today to begin working on the project and being able to show what we've done toward it when we present to the judges 11 months from now in New York."
