One Claxton High School 10th grade student was killed and another was injured after an early morning car accident on Highway 129.

According to the Evans County Sheriff's Office, the wreck happened around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. Gloria Lopez was driving when her car left the road and hit a culvert. Lopez, a soccer player at Claxton High, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her male cousin was rushed to Savannah.

"She was on the soccer team. They'd just concluded their season. We pulled them from class and told them first as well as friends and classmates. It's tough. You do what you can to start a healing process,” said Principal Dr. Justin Russell.

The Georgia State Patrol Reidsville office is investigating the crash.

Claxton High School released the following statement:

We are all deeply affected by the tragic loss of this delightful student and we extend our condolences to the Lopez family. Gloria will be remembered as a respectful and caring young girl that did whatever she could to make others smile. She performed well in school, participated in both athletics and student activities, and enjoyed being with her friends. Our school and community will come together to not only mourn our loss, but to celebrate the life that was lived

Russell said the school has counselors on hand for students who need them.

Lopez's cousin, a 9th grader, remains in critical condition.
