Some unsung heroes in the field of education were honored Thursday night.

The Savannah Chatham County Public School System coming together to recognize the instructional support person from each school.  They are the custodians, cafeteria workers, nurses and administrative assistants who keep schools running smoothly.

"As superintendent, we often say if you want to know what's going on, ask the support staff what's happening because they are often closest to the child to really get to know the student, the family and the child's needs. Many times that's the advocate for the child to make a difference in that child's life,” said Superintendent Dr. Thomas Lockamy.

And this year's Instructional Support Person of the Year is Freddie Milton, Jr.! Milton's an administrative assistant at Sol C. Johnson High School. He has worked with the Chatham County school system for the last 24 years.

I was honored to host this prestigious award celebration.
