GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) -

Vulcan Materials Company unveiled its new rail yard on Sonny Perdue Drive in Garden City on Friday.

The company is the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates. It's also a major producer of asphalt mix and concrete.

The aggregates are used to build and repair things like roads, bridges and ports.

The project for the Savannah location started back in 2004, and the company struggled to find the best location, until now.

"Our purpose here is to rail material down from our Macon quarry and service the Savannah market with the aggregate that we produce,” said Vice President and General Manager of Vulcan Materials – Georgia, Bart Boyd.

"The further you have to truck it, the more difficult it is and the more expensive it is to get it here or around here. So having this facility here is fantastic for the construction business up and down 95, up and down 16,” said Tim Echols, Georgia Public Service Commission.

This state of the art facility is the 25th location for Vulcan in Georgia.  Most are located on the outskirts of Atlanta.
