RIDGELAND, SC (WTOC) -

Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened just before 1 a.m. Saturday on East Main Street in Ridgeland.

Police identified the victim as 23-year-old Davonte Freeman. Ridgeland Police found Freeman unresponsive with a single gunshot wound to the head. He was airlifted to Memorial in Savannah where he later died.

The victim’s family said Freeman’s brother dragged him down an alley behind a nearby KFC to safety after the shooting.

Barry Bolden, the victim's father, said he was not happy with how the crime scene was handled. “When I got here, the police and everything was out here and we stayed out here maybe 30 to 45 minutes and then all of a sudden the police just left and leave everything up and no crime scene tape or nothing like that and people started walking through the crime scene and the blood, the eye glasses, everything still over there and people just walking through the scene," said Bolden.

Authorities ask anyone with information to contact the Jasper County Emergency Services at 843.726.7519, Lieutenant Litchfield at 843.726.7509 or Sergeant McIntosh at 843.321.0780.
