Effingham County Mourns Lost Teen

Friends and family are mourning the death of a South Effingham High School senior who was just five weeks from graduation. Jesse Bowlin, 19, was killed in a car accident yesterday morning and he's going to be missed by a lot of people.

Many people say Effingham County isn't going to be quite as exciting any more. Up until now, those who knew Bowlin, whose nickname was Renegade, say he may have been most famous for skipping school, going fishing, and needing to be rescued on the Savannah river.

"There's a casket they wanted to get that has bass on the ends of it," said Macon Daniel, his uncle. "It's a little bit more expensive of course, but it just fits his personality."

Bowlin's renegade attitude made him fun to be around, and popular all over the county.

"I don't think there's anybody in this whole county, school-wise especially, that didn't know or like Jesse," said Daniel.

"We're still going on day to day. It is a little quieter than normal," said Lang Brandon, Bowlin's principal at South Effingham.

He says the school's been subdued the last couple days and classmates have had to talk to counselors to help them cope. "Students who are going through this grieving process have had people to talk to, and we think we've done a good job in that arena and certainly we've spoken with a lot of kids."

A special fund has been set up to help Bowlin's family pay for his funeral. You can donate at any Bank of America to the Jesse Bowlin Fund, or mail donations to:
