Students Raise Money for Phone Cards for Troops

We're always amazed by the generosity of students, and you can find some very big hearts at Largo Tibet Elementary school.

Students are sending troops overseas a special gift that'll keep them in touch with their loved ones.

Back in February, third grade teacher Shirley Watson started what she calls 100 Pennies for 100 Soldiers. The school put jars in businesses and at the school to raise money to buy phone cards for troops.

They raised $650. Today students went to Hunter Army Airfield and bought 44 phone cards.

"We just want to show them how much we love them and show we are caring for their families are away and how much we appreciate what they are doing in Iraq for us," said Watson.

"For morale, it makes a huge difference, and it brings a little bit of home to them there," said Lt. Col. Michael Sutton.

Lt. Col. Sutton will distribute the phone cards later this month.
