CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A technology upgrade at the Chatham County Jail now allows people to visit with inmates in the comfort of their own home.

The new video system works on computers, tablets and even cell phones. All visits are recorded and cost 40 cents per minute or $8 for 20 minutes.

Corporal Gwendolyn Young says this allows people who live out of town or are not able to leave the house to still have access to their loved ones that are behind bars.

"I think you feel more private when you're visiting from home to see the house. And you get two visits from the home. Here, we can stop if you come twice a day but from home there's no stopping whoever does those two visits from home. That’s what they do,” said Cpl. Young.

She says this will also cut down on the foot traffic at the Visitation Center.  Now, she says roughly 600 people come by every day.
