FORT STEWART (WTOC) -

A farewell and retreat ceremony for the Third Infantry Division's Deputy Commanding General was held at Fort Stewart on Monday.

Brigadier General Douglas Crissman is heading overseas to take over the Deputy Commanding General support position in the United Kingdom's 3rd ID.

Prior to becoming Deputy Commanding General at Fort Stewart, Crissman served with the 3rd ID Headquarters in Afghanistan as Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force-3.

Surrounded by family, friends and fellow soldiers, Crissman said his goodbyes.

"The mark of a leader is what happens in that unit after he or she is gone. So the fact that the soldiers that continue to serve in the division understand the concepts that we've taught them and continue to practice those principles will make a difference for the long term,” said Brig. Gen. Crissman.

Over a 27-year career, Brig. Gen. Crissman has served in five of the Army's ten active Divisions.
