SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 16-ranked and second-seeded Armstrong State University softball squad blasted three home runs to pick up a 9-1 five-inning win over seventh-seeded USC Aiken in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division II Softball Southeast Regional #2 on Thursday afternoon at the Armstrong State Softball Field.
The Pirates (36-12) advance to face sixth-seeded Pfeiffer - 4-1 winners over second-seeded and No. 18-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne - in a winner's bracket game at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. USC Aiken (29-21) will take on LR at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in an elimination contest.
Junior Hannah Reppert blasted a two-run home run in the first inning to put Armstrong State up, 2-0. Senior Peyton Roth delivered a two-out RBI single in the second to extend the lead to 3-0, then junior Jane Trzaska hit a solo home run and sophomore Autumn Parrish followed with an RBI single to give the Pirates a 5-0 advantage in the third inning.
USC Aiken got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by pitcher Taylor Morgan (17-14), but the Pirates finished the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double by Roth and another two-run home run by Reppert.
Junior Tori Bates (15-7) collected the win for the Pirates with five innings of four-hit, one-run ball, walking one while striking out two. Morgan took the loss for the Pacers, giving up 12 hits and nine runs in 4 2/3 innings of work, walking three while striking out four.
Roth finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Reppert went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI.
