This week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week, and the Chatham Emergency Management Agency is asking residents to make sure to do several things.
They ask that you check with your insurance company, make sure your home is strong enough for a storm, and also to prepare for the aftermath of the storm.
CEMA says this week is important, because even though it's been a while since there was a serious storm, people forget how serious these storms may be. While there is no potential threat, now is the time you should be making an evacuation plan and an emergency kit for you and your family.
"Start getting those types of things together so all you have to do is grab it and go. We say do a go kit if that's the easiest way to do it, because you don't want to be running around and scrambling at the last minute trying to get your personal documents and your personal items, when really you should be running out the door," said, Meredith Ley, with CEMA.
CEMA reminds locals to remember it could take weeks and even months to come back to an evacuated area, depending on how bad the storm hits.
