CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Seven people graduated Wednesday from the Savannah-Chatham Mental Health Court.

The two-year long program is an opportunity for mentally ill offenders to turn their lives around through community support meetings, daily treatment and more.

It's a collaborative effort between community partners like the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, Savannah Counseling Services and Union Mission, just to name a few.

Because of this program, law enforcement can instead focus on dangerous and violent offenders in the community.

"They go through a lot to get through to where they are. Every time I come to a graduation, I'm just very happy to see them moving on in life. It shows that they could be in prison right now, but they're come through our program and they've become better citizens because of it. And that's just a great feeling,” said Mental Health Court Coordinator Steve Brown.

Since 2007, the Mental Health Court has seen at least 80 graduates.
