SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Congratulations are in order for Mrs. Kathy Metz.

Monday, she was named Grainger Nissan Teacher of The Year. Mrs. Metz teaches 8th grade at Calvary Day School.

Unfortunately, 2016 is her last year teaching. She tells us two years ago, she was diagnosed with leukemia.

After treatment, she went back to teaching. A year ago, it came back.

This time, she had a bone marrow transplant and says so far, everything is going well and she feels good.

Although she misses the kids, Mrs. Metz she hopes to stay in their lives forever.

"I want them to know that they can accomplish anything if they want to. If they work hard, stick to it, keep their education going, they can make it. And to that one that had a really rough time, and he comes out and does super, that's exciting,” said Metz.

Mrs. Metz was also presented a $1,000 check from Grainger. For fellow teachers, she says to love what you're doing. That it's about working with kids and making a positive, everlasting impact on their lives.

And for the kids, she tells them to never give up.
