BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - Beaufort County Council members voted "Yes" to a property tax increase.
Monday night was the first of three readings.
The taxes would be raised for second homeowners because of a Beaufort County School District shortfall.
Council now needs to raise $5 million to offset the district's tax revenue shortage.
If county council does not vote in favor overall, the school district will have to reduce its budget for the next school year.
Council also unanimously voted "Yes" to putting a sales tax referendum on the November ballot.
If passed, the increase would generate more than $100 million over the course of four years. That money would pay for public safety projects, economic development and recreation projects throughout the county.
