Sign up for medical registry to prepare for hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts in one week, and if you haven't prepared, now is the time to start.

It's especially important for residents with functional or medical needs, and no way to evacuate to have a plan.  That's where a Chatham County Health Department registry comes in to help.

In case of a hurricane, people on the registry would be evacuated to an American Red Cross shelter in a safe, inland county.

"This is a general shelter, so there will be people there to assist them in those shelters. Medical folks with medical needs will most likely be transported to a nearby hospital,” said Coastal Health District Public Information Officer Sally Slibermann.

It is important to note that people in nursing homes and assisted living facilities are not eligible for the registry. They must follow their facilities' plan.

If you're interested in being on the registry, you must apply. To apply, please call 912.691.7443 and the protected health information authorization form can be downloaded by clicking here.
