SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Thirty-eight students received their diploma Wednesday during graduation at City Hall.

The 8th grade students were with the Savannah Youth Council. They spent the past year learning about government and undergoing leadership and public speaking training.

All of their hard work paid off inside City Council Chambers on Wednesday.

The ceremony featured remarks from Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach and Alderman Van Johnson along with a few words of inspiration followed by the presentation of the long-awaited diplomas.

Class President Langston Redden spoke at the ceremony.

“You have a lot of standards to live up to while you're in the Savannah Youth Council. You're kind of expected to join the Chatham County Youth Commission in the 10th grade, but you have a lot of responsibilities and standards you have to live up to. Just be ready for that,” he said.

The Savannah Youth Council is organized by the City of Savannah in an effort to engage our youngest citizens with city government which ultimately creates a more involved public.
