Construction is underway to build a new hotel in downtown Savannah.

City leaders attended the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning on Williamson Street. Rockbridge, a hotel developer based in Ohio, plans to build a seven story boutique hotel. They are partnering with local architect Pat Shay to help with the overall design of the project, which includes a public staircase from Bay Street to River Street.

“Obviously you need to have something to be able to get down there. Everybody has been going down a goat path the last 20 years because nothing has been developed down here and the city never spent any money on a path down to River Street. This enables people to walk down in a safe manner and you don’t have the liability you would have otherwise,” said Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach. "We have people fall on the other one there. We have to make it a safe entrance/exit for the people."

The mayor said they will be reimbursing the developer and plan to spend about $1 to $2 million of public funds on this staircase. The entire project is expected to be completed in the next 15 months.
