Portman’s Superstore opened in Savannah in 1936. The City of Savannah declared Wednesday, June 1st to be Portman’s Superstore Day in celebration of 80 years in business.

It was technology and radio that helped Ben Portman start the business in 1936. The business would see many changes in music and technology over the years, but not in the core values of this small family owned business.

“Just like today, I’m the front man and meet all the customers, my wife handles the office, my mom did the same, my mother was the office back then, my father was the guy who did all the buying and selling and working with the sales people,” said Jerry Portman.

Over the years, many stars have stopped by to play from Chet Atkins to Widespread panic. Music connects and Portman’s has been trying to connect those people for 80 years.

“We have always worked with music education, we have a relationship with the Chatham County public schools, and we do help them begin the beginner band students here in Chatham County instruments in honor of my parents County to help students that don’t have the financial ability to help make this happen,” said Portman.

Over 400 students are currently getting musical instructions, whether it be for school bands, rock bands, people who have rekindled their passion or in helping to form bands for an actual concert.

“We find people taking lessons right now between 8 and 80, so never too young to start and never too old to start. If you really want to give music a try” said Portman.
