K-9s, Helicopter Used in Downtown Police Training

Did you hear the sound of crime-fighting in downtown Savannah last night? What looked like a normal patrol in Forsyth Park was actually a training exercise. They called in the police helicopter to track down a would-be mugger.

Once he was in the spotlight, a police K-9 team took him down and held him till officers moved in.

They're boosting patrols and using decoys downtown. "This is going to affect criminals," said Keith Vermillion with SCMPD. "They'll see the intended victim and not know it's an officer ready to apprehend them and take them into custody."

The operation continues tonight in another part of town.
