Tybee Island to hold budget hearing for fire department after decline in volunteers

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

This week on Tybee Island, a budget hearing regarding the fire department.

According to Mayor Jason Buelterman, the city is budgeting for new full-time firefighters after seeing a decline in volunteers.

In a recent report to the public safety committee, Fire Chief Ashley Fields said only seven volunteers have completed training required by the state. He is suggesting the addition of two full-time firefighters.

City officials have accounted for that in this year's budget by getting rid of the fire department's sole administrative assistant position.
