EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The search for a new CEO for Effingham County Health Systems is underway.

On June 7, the Effingham County Hospital Authority Board met for the first time since long-time CEO Norma Jean Morgan abruptly retired two weeks ago.

The hospital board said it asked Morgan to retire because they felt it was time for a leadership change as the hospital reorganizes to a non-profit status.

However, those in the audience wanted answers as to why the board felt the need to make a change now.

“What can you tell me is the reason why you’ve done what you’ve done? When this is a woman, tell me board, is the hospital in the red? Tell me what she did wrong,” asked a woman who attended the meeting.

“I would like to ask you to reconsider your decision involving Norma Jean Morgan,” said another woman in attendance.

“If it wasn’t for Norma Jean, we would not have this hospital at all, but things change and we have to move forward, the decision’s been made,” said Effingham Hospital Board Chairman Richard Rafter.

Fran Baker-Witt is currently the interim CEO at Effingham Hospital, but the board says they are launching a nationwide search for a new CEO.
