A Lowcountry student in the Bluffton area decided that he wanted to change things up and do his birthday differently by donating books to children in need instead of receiving gifts.

9-year-old Mikey Garcia collected more than 400 books and Wednesday, he donated the books to students at Red Cedar Elementary.

He said he was inspired by a friend who did a similar good deed.

Now these kids will be able to enhance their home library.

“Instead of getting gifts for my birthday since I already had enough stuff at my house, I decided I should do a donation and since I like reading, I decided I would do one for books. You’re helping other people too instead of just yourself,” said Garcia.

This will be a part of the United Way reading program helping kids to get on their grade reading level by the fourth grade.

They say 33 percent of American students are not reading at the right level by that time.
