ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The State Botanical Garden of Georgia will soon have a new home. The University of Georgia is planning a new building for the garden. The plans were approved recently by the state Board of Regents, which oversees Georgia's public colleges and universities.

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - An inmate has died inside the Russell County Jail in Alabama. Sheriff Heath Taylor says 33-year-old James Devitt, of Phenix City, took his life inside a cell Thursday. Devitt was in the jail for almost a month on a second-degree burglary charge.

WINDER, Ga. (AP) - Funeral services have been held for former Winder Mayor Lamar "Buddy" Ouzts. Ouzts, who led the city from 1981 to 2007, died Wednesday. He was 82. The Athens Banner-Herald reports Ouzts, a lifelong resident of Winder, was a man deeply involved in his community, giving his energies to adult literacy, programs for youth, battered women, the elderly and health agencies.

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A ceremony will soon be held to rededicate a marker that commemorates a Georgia lynching. It has been 103 years since 20 men broke into a prison and hanged a Jewish man, Leo Frank, in Cobb County. The marker has been in storage due to road construction in the area. A ceremony is planned for Aug. 23 to rededicate it.
