COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina House members say they are divided along party lines on how to allocate money for the next fiscal year. The chamber adjourned Thursday after hours of debate on an amendment to the Senate's $8 billion budget introduced by Republican Rep. Brian White. House Democrats said colleagues need to allocate more money to safety in schools and correctional facilities.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A longtime prosecutor who led the federal hate crime case against Dylann Roof in South Carolina is among the nominees for positions on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The White House has announced that Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Richardson had been picked to fill a 4th Circuit vacancy.

DETROIT (AP) - A judge is urging lawyers to try to settle a lawsuit by the Michigan family of a Marine recruit who killed himself during basic training. Raheel Siddiqui died in 2016 at Parris Island, South Carolina. The Marine Corps says the 20-year-old from suburban Detroit jumped from a stairwell after a confrontation with a drill instructor. Detroit federal Judge Arthur Tarnow told lawyers for the government and the family to "talk to each other."

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon faces questions from lawmakers to determine whether he will lead embattled state-owned utility company Santee Cooper. The Charleston attorney told a state panel Thursday that his goal is to provide accountable leadership and transparency. Gov. Henry McMaster tapped the former prosecutor for the position last month.
