ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia joins Alabama and three other states in a week-long speed enforcement operation beginning Monday. "Operation Southern Shield" will run through Sunday, July 22. Law enforcement in Georgia and Alabama will join Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina in pulling over drivers who are traveling above legal speed limits on interstates, major highways and local roads.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina's capital city is reversing course on a project to add bike lanes to a busy road after residents complained. The State newspaper reports that Columbia City Manager Teresa Wilson says that negative feedback from area residents has prompted officials to scrap the plans to add bike lanes to a 7-mile stretch of Farrow Road in the northern part of the city. Several miles of bike lanes bad been painted already, but the city announced Friday that those will be removed.

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are investigating what caused a South Carolina man to drive his pickup truck into a ravine in a single-vehicle fatal accident. Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says in a news release that 79-year-old Harold E. Lanier of North Augusta was pronounced dead at Augusta University Medical center after the crash on Saturday night. The news release says that he was traveling north on a highway near Aiken Technical college when witnesses saw him begin to swerve.

(AP) - The historic South Carolina church where nine black worshippers were slain is unveiling the design for a memorial to the victims. Emanuel AME Church in Charleston will release the plans at an announcement Sunday afternoon as part of its 200th anniversary celebration. The memorial was designed by Michael Arad, the architect behind the 9/11 Memorial in New York.
