CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah College of Art and Design Buzz Bus program announced its annual art supply giveaway Thursday morning.

This year’s giveaway promises to be bigger than ever by allowing educators from Chatham County and local nonprofits to select new and gently used art supplies donated from SCAD students.

The Buzz Bus began in 2010 and has impacted more than 13,000 students by surprising local elementary and middle schools to promote art education through workshops, book readings and musical performances.

"One of the things that is really important about fine arts, especially with schools, is when we create with things, we use items up. So we tend to go through quite a bit of art supplies,” Island Hope teacher Magen Peigelbeck said. “Little does everyone know, we have limited budgets, as well. For an example, I have $500 to spend for kids K-8 for the school year. So a lot of our teachers work with the community to get donations, writing grants, anything we can do to get art supplies for our children."

The donation period was scheduled to coincide with the end of the SCAD academic quarter to better provide SCAD students with the opportunity to contribute to the local community.
