The U.S. Army marks its 241st birthday next week, but Hinesville got an early start on the celebration.

Fort Stewart commanders helped community leaders cut a birthday cake as part of the city's weekly Farmers Market.

Organizers noted the impact Fort Stewart and its 20,000 soldiers have on the culture, economy and other aspects of local life.

"Those soldiers and their families, they get their cars washed. They get haircuts. They buy groceries. When they separate from the Army, they start businesses and buy homes," said Michelle Ricketson of the Downtown Development Authority.

The Army's official birthday comes Tuesday.
